Developing Your Thinking

Critical thinking is a fundamental abstract Cognitive Enabler (ACE). Critical thinking is a skill that most of us need more of and we can all think of others who don't appear to have any at all. At Socelor, it is our business to teach you how to use ACEs. We don't specialize in teaching you what it is, but we teach you how to do it. Many of you will have taken classes about thinking skills that focus, almost exclusively, on what thinking skills are. We teach you how, not what.

Jesse Martin

Dr. Jesse Martin is a cognitive scientist and learning expert who has dedicated his career to understanding how humans develop advanced thinking capabilities. His groundbreaking research focuses on Abstract Cognitive Enablers (ACEs) such as critical thinking - the fundamental building blocks of higher-order thinking that distinguish human cognition.

As a Professor and Senior Lecturer at Bangor University (1995-2014), Dr. Martin was pivotal in transformed the School of Psychology into a globally recognized institution, ranking 39th worldwide. His innovative approach to teaching cognitive development revolutionized how students learn complex thinking skills. Serving as an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Lethbridge for several years since his return to Canada, he continues to advance the field of cognitive development and learning science.

Dr. Martin's research specifically examines how humans can enhance their cognitive capabilities in an era of advancing artificial intelligence. His work demonstrates that while AI excels at processing data, human minds possess unique capabilities for integrative thinking and cognitive synthesis. This research has earned recognition from AI pioneers like Geoffrey Hinton, validating his theories about human cognitive potential.

As CEO of Socelor since 2018, Dr. Martin applies his expertise in cognitive science and the methodologies developed over his years as a researcher for enhancing human thinking capabilities. His approach is grounded in decades of research in The Science of Learning, focusing on developing and integrating Abstract Cognitive Enablers (ACEs) - the fundamental skills that enable advanced human reasoning and creativity.

Dr. Martin's academic credentials include a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Wales, Bangor, an M.Sc. in Psychology from the University of Calgary, and a B.Sc. in Psychology from the University of Lethbridge. His contributions to understanding human learning and cognitive development have earned him induction into the Academy of Teaching Fellows and recognition as a LinkedIn Top Voice for Education.
